file1901262972384Green Smoothies are great for a healthy breakfast, however, do you ever get tired of eating the same ingredients over and over again in your green smoothie? What if you could never run out of great tasting green smoothie recipes and add extra ingredients that will help you have extra energy and optimum health all day long? Here are 10 of my favorite superfoods to add to green smoothies that will do just that:

1. Nut butters- peanut butter, almond butter and sun butter (made from sunflower seeds) are my favorites. You can add 1 small spoonful.  I love adding nut butters because it gives the green smoothies an extra kick, adds in a little more fat and help keep you full for a longer period of time. Plus it tastes yummy.

2. Chia seeds- these amazing yet small seeds add fiber and help you feel full longer. Make sure to only use a small amount or else you will get full too fast.

3. Flax seeds- great for helping with fiber and to help balance your hormones. Flax is often used to help women who need help balancing their estrogen flow.

4. Kelp- this is a great way to add sea vegetables to your diet and sea vegetables are naturally full of iodine. This is especially important if you have thyroid issues.

5. Raw cocoa powder- Who doesn’t love chocolate? Raw cocoa is a great way to get your chocolate fix without all the added sugar or fat and it tastes just like chocolate.

6. Essential oils- Lemon, Lime, Ginger, Orange, and Cinnamon are some great ones. Be careful though, 1 drop is plenty for a smoothie as a little goes a long way. You also need to make sure that you are using a therapeutic quality that is safe for internal use.

7. Hemp seeds- Just like chia and flax you can also use hemp seeds to help you feel full faster and get more fiber. Personally I prefer chia or flax over hemp in smoothies but hemp can be used as well.

8. Quinoa- yes really, just make sure you cook it first and that you add only add a few tablespoons. This helps increase your protein intake and can give you a boost just like with carbs even though quinoa is naturally low in carbs.

9. Wheatgrass- this is great alone with water in a shot glass, but it also is great in smoothies and can even be used with fruits and without any other greens.

10. Coconut oil- this adds fat that can help keep you full, adds flavor and is good for you. It is especially good in smoothies that have a higher amount of fruit and a lower amount of greens.

In summary instead of making a classic green smoothie with fruit, greens and milk or water and drinking that same recipe over and over, why not add one or more of these superfoods and increase your energy, add variety to your diet, and get more fiber, and protein naturally? Your green smoothies will taste better, keep you full longer and help contribute to your overall health.
